Painting / Painting conservation

Marie-Louise Lorentzen

I’m a Swedish painting conservator from Stockholm, working with conservation of art and interiors since my degree in 1994. Sometimes I take part in communicating the projects, like the podcast on 10 years of restoring The University Museum of Natural History in Bergen, or the film on what happens with the objects awaiting re-opening of Hanseatic Museum, partly filmed at my Isotop studio. (links further down)

“Sometimes the conservation process becomes part of the history of the art object. Such as saving the mysterious Listhaug painting after nail paint remover used by students to remove tagging. The new owner needed fast conservation aid before an auction to fund cancer research while the story was still “hot”. The conservation project took place at my living room floor.”

I paint and teach in painting materials and techniques (Fine Arts). I enjoy drawing croquis and combine my art school background in painting and sculpture, costume design and dressmaking with new projects including Shibori and dyes. Handcrafts have always fascinated me, the «slow art» and perfectioning of skills as well as the hasty minute drawings of the model. In teaching art classes, the joy of passing on knowledge of materials and methods - on how to make your own media, inspire to work more conscious and environmentally friendly, and notifying how students find the same pleasure in the “slow cooking of art” – is just fantastic!
